Welcome to Cherokee Council's Eagle's Nest
What is the Eagle's Nest?
Eagle’s Nest is a place where Adult Eagle Scouts can gather to share their scouting experiences and find ways to help today’s scout program. All Eagles are welcome to join us on line or at scouting events. Send us your email address and we will send you information on future happenings.
Sharing His Eagle Story -Darrel Fry
My scouting experience was fantastic. Two National Jamborees, three years as Summer Camp Staff, Order of the Arrow Chief, involvement in my Troop and Post. The list is long and every one of the things I did helped shape me as a person. I (like most scouts, I expect) had trouble finishing those last one or two merit badges for my Eagle. Back in 1962, an Eagle Project was not required. Basically the requirements were centered around merit badges and scouting activities. If it hadn’t been for my parents, I probably would not have completed the eagle requirements. I now see why parents also receive recognition at the Eagle Court of Honor. As I look back on all the things I have accomplished in my life, none am I more proud of than the Eagle rank.
I obtained the Eagle rank the same year I started college and was forced to leave scouting behind. Marriage, two kids, and a job that required long business trips kept me from getting involved in scouting for most of my adult life. The fantastic scout experience was always in the back of my mind and I felt the need to give back to a program that had so profoundly impacted my life. Once the kids were on their own and the job wasn’t so demanding, I found time to get involved with scouting. First, it was just helping with a few troop events. Eventually I took on the District Chairman’s duties and helped start a Youth Court/Venturing Post in Nowata. Later I replaced my Father on the Council Executive Board. I only wish that I had started giving back earlier.
